Visual Text

Image: This image shows two different scenarios; one who is enjoying his day at the beach, and one who is the exact opposite. The image also shows the condition of both men respectively. One has clean and pristine mat to lie on, while the other has nothing to lie on and has to resort to lying on just the ground. This shows the difference between two different levels of wealth, while still having the same action.

Colour: The colour of the man on top are bright and vibrant, which shows his status and state of living. On the other hand, the dull colours of the other man, shows how his life is undesirable.

Text: The phrase "sleeping on the beach isn't always nice" shows how the action of sleeping on the beach is deemed enjoyable in general while there are others around the world who are forced to do it.

Layout: Having the text separating both parties, makes it easier for us to compare and contrast between the different situations.

This is an image of waste and rubbish in the ocean. And the pattern that the rubbish is in is supposed to be the way the fish swim.
Colour: 
It is very colourful as to depict the wonders of the ocean.
Text: 
The text in the poster , "The greatest wonder of the sea is that it's still alive." brings the audience to the consequence of pollution.
Typographical Features: The words are written in bold and all in capital letters to stress the importance of not littering.
Layout: Most of the image is filled with the picture of the ocean filled with litter and only small part of the image is filled with words, thus the reader will see the picture first.

Colour:
The colours used in the poster are dull, giving the poster a foreboding and gloomy look.
Text:
The text in the poster "Stop climate change before it changes you" bring the reader's attention to the consequences of climate change.
Typographical Features:
The words are written in bold in capital letters to emphasize the sentence.
Layout:
The image occupies most of the poster, with the words at the bottom. The reader will see the image first before reading the text.

Image:
The image is of a boy who is sitting at at a flight of staircase. His clothing and shoes are all tattered and not in a very wearable condition.
Colour:
The colours on the boy makes him blend in with the staircase, making him look invisible. The dull colours of the poster also gives a sad tinge to it.

Text:
There is a text: "Do not ignore me" written in Chinese. It makes the reader think of all the times that they have ignored unfortunate children on the streets begging for money. 

Typographical Features:
 The words "Do not ignore me" in Chinese is written on a white placard that is very obvious when placed against the dull background, so it is able to catch the reader's attention.

Layout:
The boy is situated at the side and is not easy to spot at first glance, however, the placard is placed almost near the center of the poster, and since the placard is white, it is easier to catch attention

Image: This image shows us how global warming is affecting humans. A little girl is standing on top of an iceberg. A noose is hanged around her neck.As the ice melts, the closer the girl gets to being hanged. This tells us that global warming is causing deaths. Choosing a girl as the main focus will make the viewers feel that global warming is killing innocent people even little children, so in order for this tragedy to be avoided, they would do their best to reduce polluting and reduce global warming. Colour: The colours are bright and well shown to display the important features such as the ice melting and the noose. Text: The words "Climate change, human impact, creative challenge" hints to the audience that the climate change is taking a negative impact to humans and we are expected to act upon it before it is too late. Typographical Features: The font of the words are simple so that the viewers can read them easily. Layout: The image takes up a lot of space which is the main focus of the message. The words are placed at the top with a slope down to show that more and more weight is put on the noose.

Image:
This image shows a two open cans of soda, each of its own brand. One of the cans has the brand pepsi, while the other shows a can with a red background and a white streak, which supposedly represents Pepsi's rival, Coca Cola. There are two straws, one which enters the mouth hole of the Pepsi can's easily, whilst the other has hands that are holding the sides of the can, refusing to enter it. This poster is aimed to encourage people to buy Pepsi instead of Coca Cola by telling its viewers that even the straws prefer pepsi to coke.

Colour:
The background and colours used are very bright and attractive, and they represent the two soda company's well-known colours. The background is in contrast with the colour of the straws to bring more attention to the straws.

Text:
The only words which are shown is the brand Pepsi. This is to further emphasise their points of Pepsi being the only brand that the people should want.

Typographical Features:
The label is cursive and is very significant to a large majority of people who will somewhat recognise the brand. The words are in deep contrast with its background to bring out its significance and draw attention to itself.

Layout:
All elements of the picture are placed in the middle and have large proportions.

Image:

The image, taking up most of the space in the poster, is an hourglass split into two portions, one above the other. The top part shows glaciers melting and the water drips into the bottom part, which contains a city, representing/symbolising the world. As the water drips, the water level in the bottom part of the hourglass gradually increases, until it will the city.

Colour:

The grey background makes it so that there isn't a sharp contrast between it and the main picture, causing it to be painful to the eyes, but still placing the emphasis on the main picture.

Typography

There are two sentences; 'We are running out of time' and 'Act now before it's too late'. The first sentence is placed in the top part of the hourglass and the second sentence, the bottom part. This is to control the reading flow of the audience as they will most likely read left to right and top to bottom.

Layout

The image takes up the most space, while the text is small and contained in the hourglass, bringing focus to the hourglass.

Text:

The two sentences; 'We are running out of time' and 'Act now before it's too late', further intensifies the meaning of the image. The text refers to the rising water levels flooding the cities, encouraging citizens to do their part to stop global warming before the above-mentioned happens.

The image portrays a man with a distressed expression on his face as he deals with the violent splatter of blood emerging from the cellphone he is holding on his left hand. The uncurbed swash of blood unfolding from the cellphone is intended to discourage us from calling and talking to people, especially loved ones while they’re on the road driving. This poster is aimed to educate us and show us that talking while driving is a major cause to reckless driving and can be very dangerous. The blood is an exaggerated way of showing us the consequences of talking to someone who is driving which means we can indirectly cause an unwanted and unpleasant accident on the road. 

Colour
The background of the image and the subject him seems to be portrayed in very gloomy and dark colours. However, the colour of the splatter of blood from the cell phone is bright red is of high contrast from the other colours. This is to further emphasize and move the audience’s attention to the blood.

Text 
 The text “Don’t talk while she drives” is aiming to convince the audience to not engage in phone calls with people who are driving and inform of the dire results of this irresponsible behavior.

Typographical Features
The words seems to be an extension of the splatter of blood which further intensifies the emphasize put on the blood, which makes it eye-catching and link with the main message of the poster.

Layout

All main features of the poster is centralized to focus on the major point in the advertisement.

What I did:

In accordance to Mr’s Jung’s instructions, I read up on active and passive voice in the use of the English Language. This read-up on active and passive voice was an eye-opener and I learnt the different features or types of language use.

What I have learnt:

I have learnt that, when using the English Language, there are there are two special forms for verbs called voices. First, there is the Active Voice. Then,there is the Passive Voice. These voices are simply how the verbs in a sentence are and can be used.

Active Voice:

The active voice can be known as the "normal" voice that we use most of the time. In the active voice, the object receives the action of the verb which the subject gives. Example: Cats (subject) eat (verb) fish (object). 

Passive Voice:

The passive voice is used less commonly in speech. Unlike the active voice, the subject receives the action of the verb in the passive voice. Example: Fish (Subject) are eaten (verb) by cats (object). The Passive voice is used very commonly in reports or in other appliances of third person speech. 

Comparison:

Active Voice: The two kings are signing the treaty. 

Passive Voice: The treaty is being signed by the two kings.

Image : The poster shows a baby bottle that is branded by CocaCola. The baby bottle is a coke bottle, saying that babies also can drink coke

Linguistic Feature : There are very little words present, so this allows the audience to have an easier time reading the poster.

Texture Feature : The phrase “Life Begins Here” is suited with the baby bottle as life begins when one was a baby. The baby bottle tends to make the viewers think about babies.

Typographical : The words have a similar colour as the background. This makes the words unable to read from afar.

Layout : Layout is from left-to-right. On the left side would be the baby bottle that is branded by CocaCola while on the right side would be the words that plays a pun

Purpose : It is to tell the readers that CocaCola is the beginning of everything.

Audience : People who are want to find a beverage to drink

Context : It promotes CocaCola.


Culture : The design of the poster is very simple, however the baby bottle and words are related to one another.

Image 
This advertisement portrays 3 human hearts, all of different races. It shows that even though our skin colours are different, our hears are still identical. 

Colour 
The background of this advertisement is white so as to let the 3 hearts in the foreground stand out to catch the attention of the readers. The logo is also at the side of the hearts to allow the readers to understand who is behind this advertisement. 

Typography 
The fonts are black and bold so as to allow the readers to read the minimal words clearly. 

Layout 
All the elements are being placed in the center as it is the center of attention. 

Text 
The amount of words is minimal as there are only the words “White”, “Black” and“Yellow” written in the middle of the hearts. 


All these elements highlights the flaws of racism. It is trying to signify that even though our skin colours might be different, everything else (like our hearts, our minds) are still the same. Our skin colour doesn't give us a right to discriminate against others since we are all the same internally. 

Visual Text : An Analysis

The Trevor Project, an organization aimed at helping youths feel contented about their sexualities and not to be ashamed of who they are.

Image :
The image depicts a somewhat lifeless hand lying on a smooth surface, with the word "DYKE" carved into the wrist with fresh blood still flowing out of the wound. The wound is a representative of common infliction of self-harm by slashing of one's own wrists, with the word "dyke" as the reason for the self-harm. "Dyke" is a common demeaning and derogatory term for lesbians, which shows that the person who inflicted the wounds to be bullied for being a lesbian/masculine woman. The lifeless hand hanging limply implies that the person had committed the self-harm as a form of suicide. The poster is made to be simplistic, with the point being clearly brought across. The message being conveyed is that seemingly innocent words that are said can be taken as serious insults and which results in mental and physical harm to the point of the receiver of the words taking their own lives.

Words :
The poster contains only 3 words other than the website and logo of the organization. The sentence "Words can kill" is meant to thought–evoking; that words which are hurled at others can often cause great harm and can cause disastrous results, with an example in the poster showing how a single word can cause the life of another.

Typographical Features :
The usage of a græy colour and a simple font is meant to invoke a solemn mood, and to cut straight to the point of the poster.


Layout :
The hand occupies the centre of the poster, to immediately draw the reader's attention to the topic at hand. The intended reading pathway is from the hand, to the message of the poster, then to the website of the organization. The effect on the reader following this pathway is help the reader to understand what the hand symbolizes and it's significance in respect to the message of the poster. The website is added to direct the reader to the source to support the organization and know the movement of which it is advocating for.

Colours :
The colour palette used is that of a plain monochrome white/græy with a light for the background, the words and the blood dripping off the hand is a striking dark crimson. The red against the bright white background creates a stark contrast which enhances the effect of the blood on the reader to create a more emotional response, as well as to direct the eyes of the reader to the blood when seeing the poster at first sight.

Images:
This picture shows a small child with dark skin, which most people would refer to as a child from Africa. The child in the picture has a grim expression which reflects the seriousness of the situation. The gun pointing at the head of the child shows that the child is in danger of dying anytime. The pool of blood at the other side of the head shows the possible causes of death of the children of Africa and all the things they are struggling to cope with in order to survive.

Colours:

The crimson red patch on the top left hand side of the screen symbolizes blood which would link to an injury and a loss of blood. Giving the text "KILL HER FIRST" a crimson red colour also puts emphasis on death. The brownish-yellow background colour will give the impression of mud which reflects the poor environment this young child lives in.

Words:
The words "WHAT WILL KILL HER FIRST" is in capital letters to bring the readers' attention to them first. The smaller words on the left of the child's head in the pool of blood emphasizes the large number of problems an African child faces in their lifes.

Typographical features:
The use of simple font gives the reader a solemn and serious mood as compared to using a cartoon font, which would give the reader a cheerful mood.

Layout:
People normally read something from the top to the bottom and left to right so the reader will look at the picture with the impression that the children of Africa is suffering from all the problems they face (the pool of blood) and when they look at the gun on the right, they will realise that the problems might just kill them. When the reader continues looking downwards, he or she will notice the big text that reads "what will kill her first" which will add to the impact of sympathy on the reader and lastly they will decide to help these people who are suffering and will visit the website to donate money to help those suffering from poverty.

5 elements:

Image : The image portrays a tick-tac-toe diagram, replacing the "x" and "o"s with sharks and bowls. The bowls represent shark-fin soup while the sharks represents the animal itself. The top left space is the critical point whereby if the shark or the bowl is drawn in the space, that particular icon would win the game. This has an impact on the reader as most people if not everyone is familiar with the game tic-tac-toe. The first person to draw 3 consecutive icons either horizontally, diagonally or vertically wins. This shows the battle between the sharks and the making of shark-fin soup

Words:
This picture has no captions as it is based on the concept of "a picture speaks a thousand words". The sole pictorial representation is enough to get the message through to the reader.

Typographical Features: There are not much typographical features as this is a pictorial representation of the message the organisation wanted to convey.

Layout: The whole image is placed right in the middle of the poster which is where people would normally look at first when they glance upon a poster. The image being in the centre grabs the reader's attention.

Colours: The whole poster is black, grey and white which gives people a dull and serious feeling when they look at the poster. The colours match the message the organisation wants to convey as this message is serious and solemn.

Image :
On the yellow part of the image, it says 'Speak out for those who can't'' the words 'who can't' is cancelled out by another small sentence which says 'Help spread awareness of countries where freedom of expression is still a dream'  and on the right hand side of the image it shows two quotation marks and and the bottom of it, it says 'Don't take these for granted'. The point of this poster is to let the public know more about people who do not have the freedom of expression and to persuade and convince the reader into spreading awareness about this issue.

Words :
The words are 'Speak out for those who can't', 'Help spread awareness of countries where freedom of expression is still a dream' and 'Don't take these for granted'.
The words "speak out for those who can't' tells people to help spread awareness. The quotation marks and 'Don't take these for granted' lets the reader know that they are fortunate to have the freedom of expression and one should not take for granted the freedom of expression.
Lastly, "Help spread awareness of countries where freedom of expression is still a dream' is to let the reader know the main purpose of the poster.

Typographical features :
The words in the yellow part of the poster are in capital to emphasize the point of the poster.

Layout :
As people normally read and look at things from left to right, the yellow part of the poster is to let people know what they should do and after reading that, the reader would move on to the blue part of the poster which tells them what the poster is about.

Colours :
On the left side of the poster, it is yellow in colour. The colour yellow is bright and eye-catching and this would attract people's attention. The right side of the poster is coloured blue which is more calm but yet blue can also represent sadness. Blue represents the unsmilingness of the issue.

Images: 
The image shows a school of Bluefin Tunas in the deep sea. The picture is taken at eye-level, which gives a very personal feel, making it seem as if the audience is looking at the school of Tunas up close. Amongst them is a Bluefin Tuna wearing a Panda mask. This tells us that if Bluefin Tunas were as adorable as Pandas, perhaps more conservation efforts would've been put in to protect its kind. The objective of this poster is to raise awareness for threatened species who are being ignored by conservationists. 

Words: 
The short caption "WOULD YOU CARE MORE IF I WAS A PANDA?" is very impactful. It makes the audience ponder on how biased they are towards good-looking animals and how less adorable animals are often neglected.

Typographical features:

The upper case letters make the caption eye-catching, while the simple fonts are striking and solemn. 

Layout:
The picture makes up the entire poster and the caption is placed at the bottom right corner, where the audience will usually look next. The fine print is placed right below the caption, so the audience can get more information after reading the caption from top to bottom. The designer also pliced the WWF logo next to the fine print to publicize the organization, in hope that potential supporters will look it up, and find ways to contribute.

Colours:

The colours in the picture are gloomy and shadowy, creating a very somber feel, as well as a sense of dread. As dark colours are usually associated with doom, the colours used in the poster emphasize on the seriousness of the situation. 
Image: The image is a promotional for the NBC series 'Hannibal'
Colour: The red colour on black references the copious blood on the show combined with Hannibal's dark personality. Hannibal's red eyes are not an artistic quirk, in the books he has a genetic mutation which causes dark maroon eyes, which is meant to symbolise the multiple implied opinions that hannibal's evil is enough to qualify him as a demonic entity. 
Typography: The sharp, bold font emphasises the one-word title of the series and the serious, intimidating tone. 
Layout: Hannibal's face being shown next to the text, especially the creepy eyes next to 'Feed your fear' is intended to inspire fear in the audience. 
Wording: The text 'feed your fear' references the horror in the series and Hannibal's expertise in cooking and common screening of scenes where cannibalism is implied.

The image shows a man screaming at a woman, with a fist coming out of his mouth, punching the woman. 
This shows that the words that the man is screaming at the woman hurt just like a physical punch to the face. 

Words:
There are no words in the visual text, but the picture present in the visual text are very impactful because the message that the picture is sending is words hurt just like physical wounds. Just a picture is enough to send the message across and thus no words are needed.

Typographical features:

No typographical features are present but the picture itself is enough to send the intended message across.

Layout:

People tend to look at things from left to right. By showing the man punching the woman with his words on the right which is where people would look first, and then the woman being hurt on the right, it is a format easier to understand because it shows the before and after.

 Colours:

The colours in the picture are dark and gloomy colours, mostly on the greyscale. This shows that the situation is not fun, it is very serious and it is also something depressing as dark colours are usually associated with seriousness and depression.
