What I did: 

On the recent Biotechnology course lecture, the lecturer, Dr Tan had started the lecture on prokaryotic cells. It was the very first lesson where we were really taught something on Biotechnology. It was overall a pretty interesting topic and I learnt quite a few new ‘stuff’. Due to my interest and curiosity in these science-related topics, I was intrigued to research and find out more about it. The easiest way to start a research was via wikipedia, so I started right on wikipedia before starting off to ‘deeper’ sites. Though wikipedia wasn’t very reliable and all, it was neutrally a dependable website for knowledge gathering site. 

What I have learnt:

After reading simply the introduction paragraphs of the article, I realized the lectures that we had during the first biotechnology course was just briefly touching on an entire exciting topic. It was not just a topic. It was a whole chapter of science. 

Things I have learnt about Eukaryotes:

Eukaryotic cells are cells with membrane-bound organelles with different organelles performing specific functions. This is advantageous to the cells as they are able to compartmentalize many cellular functions within organelles which simply meant the division of ‘cellular’ labour. Below are the different parts/ organelles of a Eukaryote.

Cell Membrane: Phospholipid bilayer with proteins interspersed (permeability barrier)
Nucleus: Store cell’s genetic material in DNA molecules (necessity for cell division)
Ribosomes: Made of RNA molecules and proteins to synthesis proteins
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum: Ribosome-attached (synthesize secreted proteins)
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum: Tubular (synthesize lipid-based molecules)
Golgi Apparatus: Flattened stacks of interconnected membranes (Transport materials)
Vacuole: Store water mixed with cell’s waste and nutrients.
Mitochondrion: Generates energy molecule ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)

Chloroplast: Contain chloroplasts for photosynthesis for glucose production
